STA is an education charity and QCA approved awarding body whose primary objective is to save lives by ‘building safer, healthier and better skilled communities’. This is done in a number of ways: by training lifeguards, swimming teachers and first aiders and through the Learn To Swim Awards scheme - providing a progressive, rewarding and fun swimming lesson programme for all ages and abilities.

STA advocates swimming for everyone and is especially keen to encourage parents and their children to make a splash! STA works in partnership with many organisations to promote swimming and water safety including RoSPA, British Waterways and the Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain.
